This page is meant as a general guide to the process of renting property in and around London.  I hope it helps you to make safe, informed decisions when seeking property in the Capital.  There are some Do's and Don'ts but nothing too heavy or concerning.

Security - Be Safe!

Like most large cities, London has its fair share of undesirables. Although it is unlikely that you will come across one, you should still protect yourself with a few simple steps so that you can relax and enjoy the search for your new home.

Finding your property

  • If possible, always view properties with a friend or relative. Not only is it safer; their opinion can come in handy when making decisions
  • Do not go to viewings with your deposit money.  Leave it in the bank - you can always get to it within a reasonable amount of time if you need it.
  • Be wary of an Agent or Landlord pressurising you to pay in cash. There are many legitimate reasons for a cash payment being required, however, a cash payment can be made directly into the Agent/Landlord account just as quickly and provides a higher degree of security.

In residence

  • Do not hide your keys under a stone or bucket or anything else outside your house for any reason.
  • Always cut yourself a spare key and leave it with a friend or in your desk at work.
  • Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers to your home. Particularly if they require entry (for a meter reading or repair). It is highly unlikely  that a service provider (gas, electric, cable, etc) will attend to affect a repair in your home without contacting you first - so be careful and be safe.
